Our wines are made to showcase the complexity of flavor, diversity of terroir, and distinct characteristics of California’s appellations and wine regions. Our proprietor and vintner Trevor Sheehan started his journey to create a top wine collection when he became a winemaker 10 years ago. His first wines were eight barrels of Chardonnay from the Beckstoffer Vineyard and Cabernet Sauvignon from Howell Mountain.  Trevor carefully defined his own wine making style over the years drawing inspiration from fellow winemakers such as Nils Venge and Henri Jayer.

Poppy winery is located in Monterey Wine Country and was founded by the Silva Family, who in 2003 endeavored to create and perfect carefully crafted wines with a focus on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Poppy wines are produced from vineyards located in the Santa Lucia Highlands, Arroyo Seco, Monterey and Paso Robles Appellations, located along California’s Central Coast.

By controlling grapes sourcing and operating a state-of-the-art facility, Poppy combines age-old winemaking traditions with new world techniques that ensures you experience the best of California in every glass.

From crushing to bottling, the wines never leave our winery until shipped to our customers. We do everything by hand, in small lots, and by just a few people. This gives us an intimate understanding of each vineyard, each vintage, and each lot of wine so that we can consistently produce original hand-crafted wines.

Barbara “St. Amant” Spencer founded St. Amant Vineyard in 1972 with her husband Tim Spencer (not pictured). Barbara has been an integral pat of the winery sucess being at Tim’s side for guidance and support. After TIm passed away in 2006, son Stuart (pictured), carries on the winemaking resposibilities. Stuart has was educated by his father from an early age and also as a graduate of UCSB in California. Stuart is head winemaker and continues his family’s tradition of creating exceptional wine from the family vineyards and local growers.

In early 1999 Tim Spencer went to his old friend and fellow grower Jerry Fry and suggested that they strive to make the best possible Zinfandel. Jerry chose an 8.3 acre old-vine vineyard planted in 1901. Named after his mother Marian Mohr Fry Zimmerman, “Marian’s Vineyard” became widely recognized as one of the best Zins produced in the Lodi AVA, winning gold at the Califonia State Championship for the 2001 vintage. Subsequent vintages have received extensive recognition and Marian’s Vineyard is widely regarded as one of the most distinctive of the Lodi appellation.


The Fry family has been farming in California for over 150 years, and their vineyards are the source of our most popular wine – Mohr-Fry Ranch Old Vine Zinfandel and Marian’s Vineyard Zinfandel.

The warm and inviting aroma of praline, plum, and berry combine with the essence of sea spray which is characteristic of the fruit's influence from the Pacific Ocean. On the palate the wine is fruit forward and complex with hints of fig and dried fruit. It is a beautiful wine that pair well with food and stands strong on its own.

 

THE VINEYARD:

Maritime is a proprietary name for the very best Pinot Noir from the vintage. The 2013 Maritime Pinot Noir is predominantly from two vineyards located just miles from the Pacific Ocean. This vintage also includes lots of Marimar Estate Vineyard and Saltonstall Vineyard. Combined, the vineyards are planted with Dijon clones 115, 667 and 777.

 

THE WINEMAKING:

The primary processes include cold soaking for 6-8 days in stainless steel followed by fermentation to 14-16 brix then transfer to barrel and fermented to dryness. Hands on from start to finish selecting the finest barrels before bottling for this reserve Pinot Noir.

In 1974 the late Bill Smith wandered up a windy road on the Vaca Mountain range in Napa Valley and discovered the abandoned La Jota Vineyard winery. Falling for the beauty of the now famed Howell Mountain region, he and his wife Joan began their wine adventure. His first commercial vintage from this property under the La Jota Winery label was in 1982. Bill credits prominent winemaker Randy Dunn as being an initial early influence during his formative winemaking years after selling the La Jota winery in 2000, friend and winemaker Helen Turley inspired Bill Smith to try his hand at Pinot Noir. So and began the W.H. Smith label where he excelled in making primarily Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast region.

The first vintage of Maritime Ridge Vineyards—one of four vineyards—was harvested in 2002 and was released in the spring of 2004. W.H. Smith Winery now has four Pinot Noirs: a Sonoma Coast blend, Marimar Estate Vineyard, Hellenthal Vineyard, Umino Vineyard and the flagship Maritime Vineyard all from the Sonoma Coast appellation.  

Bill sourced grapes from these vineyards which he felt gave Pinot Noir its truest expression.  Bill was instrumental in the development of blending pinot noir clones after discrete fermentation process, using Clone 777, 828 and Salton115 among others. What followed was his expert blending technique that would become his signature Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir.  In addition, Bill felt a mixture of various vineyards created still more complexity, bringing out the best that each vineyard could offer while allowing for vintage consistency. His knowledge and wine making wisdom has been passed on to the winemaking staff at W.H. Smith with a pledge of continuing Bill’s legacy.

After twenty years of working as a winemaker in every corner of the world, Winemaker and General Manager Todd Graff landed at Calistoga’s Frank Family Vineyards in 2003. He has played an essential role in Frank Family’s steady growth over the last fifteen vintages. At Frank Family, Graff has applied his deep expertise in making both still and sparkling wines and has been an integral player in defining Frank Family’s reputation as a world-class producer of Napa Valley Cabernet and Chardonnay.

Winston Hill - Cabernet Sauvignon is the primary variety, along with  Merlot, Cabernet France, Petite Verdot, and Sangiovese.

Benjamin Vineyard  - It is planted with 50 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, 8 Petit Verdot, and 2 of Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot.

Lewis Vineyard  Produces 58 acres of Chardonnay and 10 of Pinot Noir.

S&J Vineyard - Planted with 75 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel.

Poppy wines are produced from vineyards located in the Santa Lucia Highlands, Arroyo Seco, Monterey and Paso Robles Appellations, located along California’s Central Coast.
By controlling grapes sourcing and operating a state-of-the-art facility, Poppy combines age-old winemaking traditions with new world techniques that ensures you experience the best of California in every glass.
 

 

 
When deciding on a name the Silva’s wanted something that spoke to the great state of California, where their family had settled so many years ago. While looking into the vineyard at wild poppies growing amongst the vines the name was born.
